Vice President of Product Management Job Description

The Vice President of Product Management for Control4 will own product management for all products and services from a market-leading smart home automation company. This role will drive the direction of all of Control4's products,  innovating and reimagining the future of the connected home. The role reports to Control4's SVP of Products & Services, Charlie Kindel, who is well known for bringing ground-breaking voice controlled smart home products (ahem Amazon Alexa) to market.

Control4 is looking for a tenacious, ambitious, self-starter with a passion for innovative consumer hardware and software products, who can serve as a strong advocate for Control4 customers. You'll be expected to have extraordinary communication skills, top notch team leadership abilities, and exceptional judgment. You'll need to demonstrate your outstanding analytical capabilities, strong persuasive writing skills, a deep technology understanding, and broad business experience. All of this can be programmed and managed remotely by integrators and dealers using the Control4 Composer family of tools and cloud services. Your responsibilities as the Vice President of Product Management for Control4 include, but are not limited to:

  • Own the Voice of the Customer Everyone at Control4 is obsessed with our customers, but Product Management has a unique role in ensuring the voices of the end-customer and our dealers are conveyed within the organization with clarity and purpose.
  • Deliver Product Vision The individual in this role is responsible for working with his or her PM team to set the product vision for the company that is in-line with our purpose and business strategy.
  • Ship the Right Product for the Right Customer at the Right Time The successful candidate will start with the core premise that PMs are the glue across the company that ensures the right product for the right customer is shipped at the right time. S/he will explicitly set Control4's bar for Product Management excellence and drive the organization to exceed that bar. Fostering innovation on behalf of customers and holding high standards are expected. The job requires leading by example in writing clear, concise and crisp documents and ensuring clear communication and coordination of requirements to business and development teams. S/he will manage the execution of initiatives from idea through launch, through ongoing operations and support. All while setting and managing the right expectations with stakeholders.
  • Craft and Deliver Delightful User Experience Design In addition to product management, this role will manage a team of user experience designers responsible for Control4's GUI and voice experiences. The UX design team defines and maintains the company's Visual Design Language ensuring delightful, simple, and consistence UX across our products. Strong collaboration with internal and outsourced industrial design teams is required.
  • Hire & Develop the Best The person in this role must provide leadership and mentorship to the Product Management Team. He or she will foster an environment where ideas are challenged and improved. He or she will measure and audit individual Product Manager performance providing direct feedback; s/he will have exceptionally high standards for performance and accountability while ensuring clear career growth. Aggressively growing the team by recruiting and hiring only the best product managers is a critical responsibility.
  • Drive Clear Product Roadmaps The VP of Product Management will define, drive, and effectively communicate a rolling multi-year product roadmap across all of Control4's businesses. The roadmap will include clear and measurable success criteria for each product.
  • Own Business Results At Control4, Product Managers own the business results for the products they drive to ship. The VP of Product Management will regularly review business metrics and proactively seek out new and improved data/mechanisms for visibility, ensuring programs stay aligned with organization objectives. S/he owns a healthy partnership and clear communication path within the Products & Services group as well as Marketing, Sales, Supply Chain, Support, Training, and Business Development.

Basic Qualifications

  • 10+ years of progressively broader leadership roles with at least two years recent experience managing Product Management teams.
  • 10+ years of experience shipping consumer device software, consumer cloud services, and/ or consumer electronics.
  • 10+ years of experience building, shipping, and operating Internet-scale and/or mission-critical systems.
  • Exceptional writing skills. Control4 has a strong writing culture: PowerPoint use is rare.
  • Demonstrated ability to use quantitative and qualitative data to back up assumptions and make decisions.
  • Proven experience defining metrics for success and failure.
  • Strong, demonstrated ability to rally and bring functional teams together, and break through stalled decision making.
  • Demonstrated experience in agile, lean startup-like product management processes.
  • Demonstrated experience consumer hardware/device product management processes.
  • Sound business & strategy judgment, proven ability to influence others, and strong analytical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to dive deep into, and become an expert in, multiple, independent technologies (e.g. networking, audio amplification, GUI frameworks).
  • Bachelor's Degree in a technology or business field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Extensive iOS and/or Android mobile app experience, but an interest in both.
  • Experience running product management for both hardware and software products.
  • MBA or equivalent experience.
