Our smart home solutions span many facets of everyday life, powered by dozens of hardware and software products we design, manufacture, and sell to be professionally installed. Our customers enjoy the convenience of intelligent lighting across their homes with our smart dimmers, switches, and centralized lighting products. Premium multi-room music is provided through best-in-class digital media receivers, high-resolution power amplifiers, audio matrix switches, and the Triad line of speakers (some of the best in-wall and in-room speakers money can buy). We delight homeowners with simple to use home theater and 4K multi-room video solutions. Customers love our hand-held remote controls, mobile apps, and touch screens. Our home automation platform is mature, robust, and full featured, supporting Zigbee networks with 1000s of devices, and integration with over 13,000 3rd party smart home devices and services. Underlying the above solutions is our line of professional grade networking products, including routers, power-over-Ethernet (PoE) switches, indoor and outdoor access points, and power distribution units. All of this can be programmed and managed remotely by our network of over 5,000 authorized dealers across the world using a set of robust tools and cloud services. Many of our solutions become mission-critical infrastructure of a home, relied on by the people who occupy these homes every time they turn on a light or lock a door.

This role reports to Charlie Kindel, SVP of Products and Services for Control4. Before joining Control4, Charlie was the Amazon Alexa Smart Home Chief and Windows Media Center founder. In this role you'll manage a global team of 25+ hardware engineers. You will be responsible for electrical and mechanical engineering as well as driving industrial design for devices in the realms of touch screens, intelligent lighting (e.g. dimmers, switches, and lighting control), multi-room audio (e.g. amplifiers, switchers, digital media receivers), multi-room video (e.g. HDMI and IP 4K video), comfort (e.g. thermostats and sensors), and professional-grade networking (e.g. routers, switches, wireless access points).

The ideal candidate is a customer obsessed hardware engineering leader who is fully immersed in the latest smart home and consumer electronics technology. She or he has repeatedly proven they can deliver category winning devices on schedule.

We are seeking a tenacious, ambitious, self-starter with a passion for creating innovative consumer devices. The role requires a leader with innately excellent communication skills, team leadership and high judgment. Proven analytical capabilities, strong persuasive writing skills, deep technology understanding, and business experience are required.

The responsibilities of the Head of Hardware Design and Engineering for Control4 role include, but are not limited to:

  • Deliver Hardware Vision The individual in this role is responsible for defining/refining the hardware vision for the company. This includes first deeply understanding Control4 customers followed by understanding the Control4 business model. The person in this role must have a firm grasp of market requirements, competition (both business and technical), pricing, and positioning. The person in this role will engage Control4 customers, partners, account managers, and technical sales teams to share the vision and as well as take strategic input to shape future device designs. Writing clear, concise, and crisp documents and ensuring clear communication inside and outside the company is a fundamental part of the job.
  • Ensure Hardware Engineering Excellence This role will explicitly craft Control4's culture and systems for electrical and mechanical engineering, industrial design, and OEM/ODM/CM engagement.
  • Drive On-Time Delivery Provide effective stewardship of the engineering planning process, appropriately balancing data driven analysis with clear decision-making to enable a faster product lifecycle. Ensure the delivery of consistent, high quality releases on time to ensure rapid customer adoption and differentiated capabilities.
  • Manage ODM and Other HW Partner Relationships Management of ODM relationship including engineering oversight and program management to ensure on time deliverables and flawless product delivery (on time, on budget, on spec).
  • Craft Industrial Design In addition to electrical and mechanical engineering, this individual in this role will own the industrial design of Control4's devices. This includes managing outsourced industrial design as well as hiring and managing world-class industrial designers to ensure Control4 devices are beautiful, easy to setup, and easy to use.
  • Hire & Develop the Best Provide leadership and mentorship to the hardware engineering and design teams. Foster an environment where ideas are challenged and improved. Monitor and measure individual performance providing direct feedback; have exceptionally high standards for performance and accountability while ensuring clear career growth. Aggressively grow the team by recruiting and hiring only the best talent.
  • Drive Clear Device Roadmaps - Maintains organization and effective processes to ensure consistency and a clear release plans and hardware roadmaps.
  • Own Business Results - Regularly review metrics and proactively seek out new and improved data/mechanisms for visibility, ensuring programs stay aligned with organization objectives. Own a healthy partnership and clear communication path within the Products & Services group as well as Marketing, Sales, Supply Chain, Support, Training, and Business Development.

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of progressing leadership roles with recent experience managing managers of others
  • Leadership of hardware engineering teams of at least 25 across multiple locations
  • 10+ years of experience in consumer hardware engineering, industrial design, and manufacturing
  • 5+ years of experience managing ODM relationships across multiple products and solutions
  • Experience developing integrated hardware/software solutions in an agile environment
  • Experience driving significant change in product development and supply chain that resulted in higher quality products and manufacturability
  • Exceptional writing skills. Control4 has a strong writing culture: PowerPoint use is rare
  • Demonstrated sound business & strategy judgment, proven ability to influence others, and strong analytical thinking skills
  • Experience with newer wireless and RF technologies (e.g. 802.15.4)
  • A B.A./B.S. degree in computer science, mechanical engineering, software engineering, or electrical engineering
