This role reports to Charlie Kindel, SVP of Products and Services for Control4. Before joining Control4, Charlie was the Amazon Alexa Smart Home Chief and Windows Media Center founder. In this role you'll manage a global team of 25+ hardware engineers with your technical expertise, product vision, and exceptional operational and people management abilities. You will be responsible for electrical and mechanical engineering as well as driving industrial design for devices in the realms of touch screens, intelligent lighting (e.g. dimmers, switches, and lighting control), multi-room audio (e.g. amplifiers, switchers, digital media receivers), multi-room video (e.g. HDMI and IP 4K video), comfort (e.g. thermostats and sensors), and professional-grade networking (e.g. routers, switches, wireless access points). As a key member of the senior engineering team you'll work with product management and software engineering leaders as we push home automation to the next level.

  • Contribute to the development of a compelling product vision and roadmap for Control4 devices based on a clear understanding of market requirements, competitive analysis (both business and technical), pricing and positioning.
  • Provide effective stewardship of the engineering planning process, appropriately balancing data driven analysis with clear decision-making to enable a faster product lifecycle.
  • Lead the hardware engineering team to foster innovation and translate the product roadmap into clear development priorities, implementable architectures and timely release planning.
  • Management of ODM relationship including engineering oversight and program management to ensure ontime deliverables and flawless product delivery (on time, on budget, on spec).
  • Ensure the delivery of consistent, high quality releases on time to ensure rapid customer adoption and differentiated capabilities versus competitors.
  • Improve engineering development approaches and processes to increase the efficiency and cost effectiveness of the engineering organization. In particular, drive increased sophistication around hardware engineering and supply chain teams.
  • Where needed, engage Control4 customers, partners, account managers and technical sales teams to communicate the value of product offerings as well as take strategic input to shape the product and business direction.
  • Serve as a world-class role model for his/her team and other executives, demonstrating the right values at Control4 as a transparent, accountable, dedicated, knowledgeable leader.


  • Improve the velocity, quality and scalability of the hardware engineering organization through the successful implementation of leading edge development processes and reporting metrics.
  • In conjunction with the broader engineering and products teams successfully develop deliver a roadmap for future product lines.
  • Align the organizational structure of the hardware engineering team to the product roadmap and ensure the requisite skill sets are in place to meet both short-term and long-term commitments.


  • Deep experience in consumer hardware and industrial design and manufacturing, preferably in a high technology consumer company or an industrial company with integrated hardware/software products.
  • Experience developing integrated hardware/software solutions in an Agile environment.
  • Deep experience managing ODM relationships across multiple products and solutions.
  • Experience driving significant change in product development and supply chain that resulted in higher quality products and manufacturability.
  • Experience with newer RF, firmware and embedded systems, is key.
  • Leadership of hardware engineering teams of at least 25 across multiple locations.
  • Over five years of recent executive level experience in a hardware engineering function.
  • Demonstrated success collaborating with product leadership and peer engineering leaders.
  • A B.A./B.S. degree in computer science, mechanical engineering, software engineering or EE is required. A Master's degree is a plus.
