POSITION DESCRIPTION SUMMARY: At Control4 there is an insatiable appetite for data to drive decision-making in support of business growth and operations. Control4 is looking for a Data Engineer that will enable critical business decisions to be made based on the accuracy and integrity of the data produced. The successful candidate will work with Control4 analysts from Finance, Supply Chain, Sales, and Marketing to identify business questions and build, deliver, document, and maintain the data sets required. He or she will also be directly involved with the execution of the company's enterprise data architecture vision and the design and development of the company's analytics Center of Excellence platform. The Data Engineer will be part of the IT Data Services team who is responsible for the design and administration of the company's enterprise data architecture, data warehouse, and data governance strategies.

 

ITEMIZED DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:  

  • Bring new technologies into the business data architecture. Explore, architect, and deliver big data and data science solutions that enable data for business decision-making.
  • Design, build, and publish standardized data sets used by the data analyst community to answer business questions;
  • Contribute to the design, development, and evolution of Control4's enterprise data warehouse;
  • Work with data trustees across the organization to audit and validate published datasets against their data sources;
  • Provide data consultation services to analysts needing help interfacing with the company data;
  • Design, develop, and maintain ETL processes and schedules required to produce data sets;
  • Provide operational support and administration for SQL Server database systems, including SQL Agent job configuration and maintenance, SQL query performance analysis, and tuning, and SQL Server system monitoring;
  • Research and troubleshoot data stewardship issues surrounding data availability and quality;
  • Document and manage the enterprise "data metadata" used by data analysts to find and understand the company's published reports and data sets.

NEEDED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:  

  • Abilities to excite and push the business forward through greater use and benefit from data technologies
  • Natural curiosity of technology, data, and business that leads to new insights and perspectives
  • Experience building and documenting standardized data sets from internal/external sources;
  • Experience implementing and documenting ETL processes;
  • Experience managing and querying data in data lakes and/or cloud data repositories such as Snowflake, Cloudera, HDInsight, or Redshift;
  • Experience designing/developing/maintaining/tuning SQL queries, stored procedures, database administration, and SQL Agent jobs on Microsoft SQL Server;
  • Experience querying and blending structured and semi/unstructured data;
  • Experience working with Agile project management processes;
  • Close attention to detail and ability to work independently, as well as part of a team, on multiple projects.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Bachelor's degree in information systems, data management, or computer science; or equivalent work-related experience.
  • 5+ years of experience as a data engineer or database administrator
  • Tuning SQL Server queries, designing indexes to improve analytics performance
  • Working with data integration and automation tools such as Talend, WhereScape, SSIS, Attunity;
  • Writing SQL, T-SQL, database stored procedures;
  • Microsoft SQL Server BI stack (SSMS, SSRS, SSIS), including demonstrated experience monitoring and troubleshooting the stack's operational performance;
  • Working with logical and/or physical data warehouses;
  • Collecting, transforming, and enriching data from disparate sources using SQL, Python, R, shell scripting, and/or other languages and technologies;
  • Working with business and technical managers and executives to collect and document data requirements 

ADDITIONAL DESIRED EXPERIENCE:  

  • Experience using Big Data query tools like Pig, Talend Open Studio;
  • Experience with change data capture (CDC) tools such as Striim or Attunity;
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools like Tableau, PowerBI;
  • Experience working with any enterprise resource planning (ERP) and customer relationship management applications such as SAP Business One, Salesforce, SAP S/4HANA, Microsoft Dynamics.
  • Experience creating or analyzing Excel workbooks to identify and model data requirements.
